Finally, “Feeding a Need for Coders”. I’ve Been Waiting For This

This article in the NY Times shows that there is a demand for education –  not just degrees – and that some people might be realizing that college is not necessarily the place to get it. Web-Era Trade Schools, Feeding a Need for Code – NYTimes.com. I commented. “Think of it as a place where […]

More On “More on Starbucks – And Arizona State – And Alarms”

An online conversation has been going on on my comment referenced in my previous post .  I will copy and past it here. Eric from NJ replied to my first comment.  (see the post ) Engineers have to have a lot of courses in math – calculus up to and beyond differential equations as well as […]

No One Wants to Be Rated

This is in today’s Wash. Post. Rating colleges is ‘like rating a blender’ — Education Department official Even though I don’t know yet what the Obama’s rating system will be and I have serious qualms, we need something, as I expressed on today’s article. “Rating, ranking, etc…is a problem. But the system we have now […]

Elite University Extension (Night, Etc..) Schools – Do You Get The School’s Education?

First, in this day and time, who knows? It may be better.  It may be worse, but it is an important topic and there is a nice piece in The Atlantic by someone who attended Harvard’s Extension School.  http://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2013/09/did-i-really-go-to-harvard-if-i-got-my-degree-taking-online-classes/279644/ I wanted to add my experience to the discussion.  I hope it will help inform people.  […]

Net Price Calculator

Congress recently mandated that colleges make a net price calculator available on their website.  I think all students and parents should use it before applying.  Also, if the college makes it hard to use or find, I would be somewhat concerned.  Finally, see my next post on “Discriminatory Pricing”

Link to A Column by Paul Krugman on Education

I think it is informative – and a little scary.  I worry that it makes the mistake of confusing “degreed” with “educated”.  I made a comment online to that effect.  Here is the link to the article, http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/14/opinion/krugman-sympathy-for-the-luddites.html?ref=opinion&comments&_r=0#postcomment
