A insider's guide to the frightening reality of higher education
Here is a list of my posts that I believe are most essential for understanding the problems with higher education. I suggest reading the page with quotes from David Riesman and Clark Kerr, first, though. Then, hopefully, some of my posts give examples and explanations of how their general observations work out in practice. The best place on this blog for seeing and understanding just how outrageous things have become – and how much some academics think they can get away with – see A Tale Out of School – A Case Study in Higher Education. Finally, keep in mind that if what follows is what just one individual has observed, how much else is there?

More Indications of What is Wrong: “On B-School Test, Americans Fail to Measure Up”
On B-School Test, Americans Fail to Measure Up – WSJ – WSJ.
Here is my comment:
”
For a former math professor, this report has no surprises. First, there is this.
The difference in scores (of what looks like about one sigma) is just a reflection of changes in American higher education. Arum and Roksa, in their seminal study and book, “Academically Adrift” show the following:
Students are reguired to study 45% lessthan in the 60′s, and 35% less than in 1980. Gain in critical skills is next to nothing. That gain used to be one sigma.
Secondly, the article notes the marketing and political response of the American higher education establishment.
Finally, everyone who has read this article would benefit from reading my comment on another good article in today’s WSJ – New On Campus, the Three Year Degree.
Then go to my blog www.inside-higher-ed.com and you will know what is happening. Good luck in changing it, though.”
