String of Sexual Assault Cases May Lead to Tipping Point – NYTimes.com

This is my comment on String of Sexual Assault Cases May Lead to Tipping Point – NYTimes.com.

I can only speak from my university experience. (I’m a former math prof.)

I have little hope for change, other than what the marketing/admissions department deems necessary.

(For example, that seems to be what happened at Harvard. See the post” ‘…[Havard’s Title IX Office’s] Sole Task Is to Get This Title IX Furor To Go Away…’ Says Harvard Law Prof. Janet Halley”. It is on my blog inside-.)higher-ed .>

Since the changes will be driven by marketing, protecting victims (and potential victims) will not be what determines the rules. The rules will be driven by brand protection. That is sad indeed, and what David Riesman saw about education in 1980, holds about almost all of higher education today.

“…advantage can…be taken of [students] by unscrupulous…institutions…Like any other interest group, the student estate often does not grasp its own interests, and those who speak in its name are not always its friends…” (Again, you see my blog for more from Prof. Riesman, Clark Kerr and others.)
