Oregon College Funding Plan May Have Potential

Instead of paying tuition, students will pay into a fund after graduation.  The plan is reported in today’s Wall Street Journa.  http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324251504578582101593420808.html?mod=ITP_pageone_1#articleTabs%3Dcomments As I wrote in a comment, it has the potential for improving education. “If everything goes right, this could be a move in the direction of holding schools accountable to both individuals and […]

New Comment On NY Times

This NY Times blog does have some new thoughts, in that it addresses the value of college as a public good.  My only complaint is that, yes, in spite of wasting a lot of money and futures, you can still add up to an overall public good; but, you shouldn’t be so wasteful if you don’t […]

Link to A Column by Paul Krugman on Education

I think it is informative – and a little scary.  I worry that it makes the mistake of confusing “degreed” with “educated”.  I made a comment online to that effect.  Here is the link to the article, http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/14/opinion/krugman-sympathy-for-the-luddites.html?ref=opinion&comments&_r=0#postcomment

“They Just Don’t Get It” part 2

Now The Atlantic doesn’t get it.  Here is their post for today, followed by my reply which I think contains some interesting facts I only recently discovered. http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/05/should-you-go-to-college-the-i-atlantic-i-faq/276392/#comments “Should who go to college where? That is the appropriate question; not, should you go to the generic college because a generic (and suspect) average says the generic […]

My take on today’s front page article in NY Times “Chinese Creating New Auto Niche Within Detroit”

Here is the link to the article http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/13/business/global/chinese-automakers-quietly-build-a-detroit-presence.html?ref=todayspaper The article starts, “Chinese-owned companies are investing in American businesses and new vehicle technology and ….hiring experienced engineers and designers in an effort to soak up the talent and expertise of domestic automakers and their suppliers.” I worry that, for reasons I give in the following comment, […]

Median Starting Salaries for College Graduates $27,000 or $40,735?

According to “…employer-based data…[of] actual starting salaries…” the median is $40,735 for 2011.  This number was reported by the National Association of Colleges and Employers. (http://www.naceweb.org/home.aspx) According to a survey by Knoledge Networks (http://www.knowledgenetworks.com/index.html), which has the “…only nationally representative sample of young people…that can be surveyed online…” it is $27,000 for “…those coming into the workforce […]

Economic Policy Institute Report on STEM jobs misses crucial point.

Another article by Jordan Weissmann of The Atlantic appeared. http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/04/the-myth-of-americas-tech-talent-shortage/275319/ It talks about a widely disseminated report from the EPI.  Unfortunately, that report seems to equate DEGREE with EDUCATION.  Here is a copy of what I posted in response. “I don’t doubt that corporations focus on profits and that H1B visas can be a tool for them. […]

Apples and Oranges Again, Good Data Set Becoming Available

Two similar articles have appeared that discuss the topic of “where” one gets a degree and its effect on starting median salary.  What is most important, I think, is that both article refer to the data that is available on the website www.collegemeasures.org .  (I commented on the Chronicle of Higher Education article and compared […]
