A insider's guide to the frightening reality of higher education
Here is a list of my posts that I believe are most essential for understanding the problems with higher education. I suggest reading the page with quotes from David Riesman and Clark Kerr, first, though. Then, hopefully, some of my posts give examples and explanations of how their general observations work out in practice. The best place on this blog for seeing and understanding just how outrageous things have become – and how much some academics think they can get away with – see A Tale Out of School – A Case Study in Higher Education. Finally, keep in mind that if what follows is what just one individual has observed, how much else is there?

“The Chronicle of Higher Education” Shows How A Good Idea Becomes A Dangerous Idea
Note the headline of this from a frontpage article of the May 16 Chronicle,
A Caring Professor May Be Key in How a Graduate Thrives – Administration – The Chronicle of Higher Education.
The article focuses little on the second part of this statement from the Gallup Report,
“…Feeling supported and having deep learning experiences means everything when it comes to long-term outcomes for college graduates…” (From page 6 of the report)
I posted on this before and here is the comment I put on the Chronicle’s page.
“Someone missed the all important “and” in the report.
“…Feeling supported AND [my caps for emphasis] having deep learning experiences means everything when it comes to long-term outcomes for college graduates…” (From page 6 of the report)
I’m sure that many universities that excel at making studetns “feel” supported, and could care less about “deep learning” (since it causes too many student complaints) will be happy to forget about the “and”. Instead, they will misstate the results of the studies as part of their marketinng. That is why it is so important that this oversight be corrected.
