Source: What a Million Syllabuses Can Teach Us – The New York Times
This Times Op-Ed contains a link to a website with informative data on syllabuses. The piece explains the data. I will just add that I believe that you can use the website to make sure you are assigned standard material. (It’s also a good idea to look at syllabuses at colleges that you trust.)
I put “assigned” in italics because “assigned” doesn’t always equate to “required to learn”.
And that’s the problem.
If the data on this website becomes well known, then almost everyone will “assign” the highly ranked material, but my prediction is that few will require that it really be learned.
Again, until the system changes, education will not improve.
